When talking about the HR Derby, Judge won it by 11-10, beating the Minnesota Twins’ Miguel Sano to take home the crown. And in doing so, became the first rookie to win it outright.
It will definitely be a show, all of Aaron Judge's bombs this season seem to break records he continues to set. The derby was first nationally televised by ESPN in 1993 on a same-day delayed basis, with the first live telecast in 1998. Although two hours were initially devoted to the telecast, it hasn't been uncommon for the program to run over schedule.
Giants' Bochy: Derby idea 'nixed' for Bumgarner6y
Before Judge, the Angels rookie Wally Joyner was co-champion in 1986. Notably, Judge ended up winning the AL Rookie of the Year because of his remarkable season in 2017. But that award was not the only honor that Aaron Judge took home that year. Competition is broken into three age levels; Division A (7-8 years), Division B (9-10 years) and Division C (11-12 years) for both baseball and softball. Many had thought this would be the year Votto would finally participate. A possible match-up between Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton will be one of the most anticipated aspects of this year’s Derby.
The 2006 through 2008 events, for example, lasted nearly three hours. There's every reason to believe Judge has the goods to win, too. His 30th home run of the season broke a Yankees rookie record that had stood for 81 years.
MLB Home Run Derby 2017 results: Aaron Judge puts on a show to win it all
Each player has one 45-second timeout in the first and second round. In the finals, each player gets a 45-second and 30-second timeout. If there is a tie, hitters will compete in a one-minute swing-off. If a tie remains after that, there will be pitch-by-pitch sudden death. In each round, each player will receive four minutes in which to hit as many home runs as possible.
In the event of a tie in a round, the two players start a “swing-off” which last’s 1 minute. If after the “swing-off” the two players are still tied, each will get three swings until the tie is broken. The 2017 Major League Baseball Home Run Derby was a home run hitting contest between eight batters from Major League Baseball . The derby was held on July 10, 2017, at Marlins Park in Miami, Florida, the site of the 2017 MLB All-Star Game. Aaron Judge won, becoming the first rookie to win the event outright.
MLB Home Run Derby 2017 Participants Announced
Judge's 23 first-round homers marked the third-best round in Home Run Derby history, trailing only Josh Hamilton's 28 in 2008 and Bobby Abreu's 24 in 2005. But eventually, they just ran out of time to settle on all the changes to "the processes and protocols" that would have been necessary to make that happen. Clark said that once Bumgarner and other pitchers expressed interest in participating, the union and MLB talked about ways to incorporate pitchers into the event.
That broke Joe DiMaggio’s franchise record for most homers in a rookie season — and it was only July 7. The gaudy numbers make Judge as viable of a candidate to win the derby as any. Stanton is the top dog in the competition, as he’ll be right at home in the Marlins’ stadium. He won the competition last season with 61 total homers, a new record.
Blackmon came back from the timeout hitting balls real short of the wall, but got back into the swing of things with 30 seconds left and smacked another four before time elapsed to give him 14. Not a single one over 440 feet, so no bonus time as predicted, but it’s hard to be upset about 14. Competitors in the derby will face a similar set of rules to the past two seasons. Each player will have four minutes to try and hit as many home runs as he can. A player can add bonus time to the clock depending on the distance of the homers hit — those who his two homers of 440 feet or more get 30 seconds to continue in the round. If there's one man who could challenge Stanton in both popularity and physical presence, it is Aaron Judge, a leviathan who has drawn innumerable comparisons to TMGS in his brief career.
Clark would not talk specifically about what was discussed, but he expressed surprise at the popular theory in San Francisco that the union opposed allowing pitchers to take their hacks in the Derby. Tony Clark, executive director of the players' union, told ESPN.com that MLB and the union plan to "revisit that and a number of other ideas" before the 2017 All-Star Game. That list makes for one of the most interesting derby fields in recent memory. There you have it Major League Baseball, your perfect Home Run Derby lineup is set, it's on you guys now to get them to sign up. The odds of all eight of the following players agreeing to join this year's Derby is basically zero, but if we can get even four or five of them, it might be the best Derby in recent memory. Needing one home run to tie, Moustakas fires a deep fly ball to right center, but it bounces in front of the fence.
Local favorite Bour goes first, and I promise I’ll do my best to avoid making puns with his name. That’s how you know it’s Marc writing the live results and not Eric. Eric would have already made like seven impressive puns with Bour’s name by now. Bonus time ended up being a disappointment, with the only ball that got to the stands ending up there because someone threw a ball to a fan. Sano leads things off in the finals, and watched a whole bunch of pitches go by waiting for one he could crush. Try 47 home runs covering 3.9 miles with his longest going 513 feet and his hardest going 119 mph.
Earlier today, MLB announced that both MLB home run leader Aaron Judge and teammate Gary Sanchez, will be participating in this year’s contest. Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton will again be participating. Stanton won last year’s contest in impressive fashion, hitting 61 home runs over three rounds. Stanton hit the 10 longest home runs in last year’s Derby, held at San Diego’s Petco Park.
According to MLB.com, Judge doesn't just lead the league in home runs—he also leads in exit velocity (97.2 MPH) and average hit distance (241.0 feet). Sano is leading all of baseball with an average exit velocity of 98.5 mph, according to MLB.com. For reference, MLB.com has Aroldis Chapman's average fastball at 98.2 mph. That means Sano has been hitting the average ball off his bat at a faster pace than a Chapman fastball – that's insane.
