An internship at a West Coast landscape architecture firm allowed Amelia to gain experience in landscape design and to translate her academic skills to professional skills. Prior to joining DGLA in 2022, Amelia earned her Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Ryan is a licensed Landscape Architect bringing over 10 years of experience to DGLA.

Architects + Designers + Builders

Picture a snow-white kitchen, bathed in light. You fill a glass with water at a farmhouse sink, set within an island where painted drawers and cabinets echo the leafy views outside. Cup in hand, you walk through a grand archway into your living room, greeted by the pleasant sight of wooden beams overhead before you relax into a plush sofa. All credit goes to Hawthorn Builders, which counts this covetable custom home among its many success stories. Just as the sandy shores of New England are punctuated by color—imagine magenta beach roses and soft-green dune grass—Angela Raciti’s inviting seaside homes strategically showcase bright hues in traditional settings.

Beyond achieving that milestone, which was great in and of itself, what struck me most about that evening was the 260 something people gathered in that hall. There, celebrating right along with me, were design and building professionals who were also commemorating 25 and 30 years in business, many whose firms were experiencing a changing of the guard and ushering in the next generation of ownership. Over time, Boston Design Guide has grown from a 144-page first edition to a 300+ page comprehensive resource trusted by professionals and homeowners alike. About ten years ago, we embraced the digital era, expanding beyond our yearly coffee table-worthy printed edition onto the web.

As the Creative Manager, Ali oversees the DGLA brand identity, manages the image library, and creates original visual media across digital and print media. Joining her experience with studio management and creative production, Ali collaborates with the team to maintain and grow the firm’s visual identity and brand. The rural character of the surrounding area fueled Wyatt’s love of the outdoors, spending his days exploring local waterways and trails. From his experiences both at home and while attending college in Western Massachusetts, Wyatt developed a love for the rustic beauty of rural New England. As a Landscape Designer, Amelia contributes to project design development and the creation of construction documents, utilizing her skills in CAD, 3D modeling and digital graphics.

Using his experience in construction, Joseph has become a vital asset to the team, offering a practical perspective when molding innovative ideas into a reality. Dan’s interest in art, science, and the exploration of the rural landscape led him to Vermont where he studied at the University of Vermont’s School of Natural Resources. It was here that he first worked in landscape construction, which drew him closer to the profession of landscape architecture.

Its searchable format, advertorials, insider tips and in-depth features allow homeowners not only to envision but realize their ultimate sanctuaries.

Prior to her studies, Caroline worked as a fine gardener and at a nursery in the Boston area, increasing her knowledge in plant maintenance, species, and health. Throughout her time at school, she interned at both residential and commercial firms, becoming apt at both small and large-scale design. Before completing her degree, Caroline earned the American Society of Landscape Architects Student Honor Award which recognizes academic achievement and design competence. Stephen grew up in the city of Boston, spending much of his youth in the backdrop of urban parks designed by Frederick Law Olmsted.

Upon return to Massachusetts, Dan worked for an award-winning landscape construction firm, honing his skills in landscape estimating and project management. Prior to joining DGLA in 2000, Dan earned his Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, graduating with honors. Prior to joining DGLA in 2011, Patrick fine-tuned his diverse skillset while working at renowned offices in Aspen, CO and Naples, FL. During this time he gained extensive experience collaborating on award-winning projects in the United States and Caribbean, ranging in scale from large master planned communities to boutique resorts and custom residential properties. Patrick holds a landscape architecture degree from the University of Georgia, graduating with honors in 2006. Amelia spent her childhood exploring coastal Maine, where she developed a love for the New England landscape.

After 16-plus years in the biz, this Boston firm is still growing in all the right ways. In the past year alone, the team challenged itself with a passive-house retrofit in Somerville, plus a historically sensitive remodel of a Brookline Victorian, complete with a 19th-century bar top for the kitchen island and on-trend green cabinetry. Launched by editor and publisher Melanie Perillo in 1997, Boston Design Guide has become a trusted and comprehensive resource that reflects the “best of the best” in the home industry.

Its location, far enough from downtown but always within the city limit, promises a contemporary experience to relax and chill out with style. Located on the 2nd floor, you'll find a relaxing space for client meetings. Our meeting tables provide ample room to review design documents.

Prior to joining DGLA in 2018, Shangyuan has worked at municipal institute and international landscape design firm where she gained valuable experience in concept design, planting design and construction documentation. She earned her Master of Landscape Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design where she was experienced in designing natural dynamics with artistic interventions. Prior to obtaining her Master’s Degree Shangyuan obtained a Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Landscape Architecture from Tongji University in China. Now at DGLA, Jordan brings an interesting perspective to the firm by combining her architectural studies with a passion for the landscape.

You’ve worked hard to make your indoor chairs and sofas picture-perfect; shouldn’t your al fresco furniture receive the same love? Upholster your patio perches with high-performance fabrics from this lauded brand, which has been stealing the hearts of design enthusiasts since its founding in 1889. Reinvented chevrons like “Tambora” work perfectly on loungers, while playful Josef Frank prints such as “Citrus Garden” and “Exotic Butterfly” do wonders for throw pillows. No matter if you’re dressing up an accent wall in your primary bedroom or papering your living room in full, heading to Charles Spada’s inspiring showroom is an easy decision. Experimentation is at the heart of every fabric Ellisha Alexina brings to life—and boy, has it paid off.

DAN GORDON LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS is an award-winning landscape architecture firm known for beautiful outdoor spaces that humanize and inspire. Located in Wellesley, Massachusetts, DGLA was founded by Dan Gordon in 1996. His admiration and knowledge of American Renaissance landscape design served as a blueprint for the firm’s evolution. DGLA fully explores these factors and studies the potential of every property to prepare unique, custom designs with a clear connection to place.

If living large is your goal, you're not going to find anything better than this — other than with a cruise on a similar Norwegian vessel that also cruises to Alaska from Seattle. Norwegian Bliss, also based in Washington during the summer, is part of the same Norwegian Breakaway-Plus class of vessels and has a similar Haven enclave. The pool area, a true stunner, comes with comfortable padded loungers, a pool and whirlpools. Its retractable glass roof is perfect for cruises to Alaska when the weather is iffy. Of particular note, given Alaska's weather, is that one of the two main pool areas on each of these Quantum-class ships is enclosed.

The lively Pike Place Market and the mammoth "Hammering Man" sculpture are downtown must-sees. Visitors also flock to the waterfront for fresh seafood, the Harbor Steps park or to board a ferry bound for Puget Sound. Seattle is served by both the Bell Street Pier Cruise Terminal and Terminal 91. All guests, except Australians, must have a valid Australian tourist visa before embarking on the ship. This electronic visa can be applied for through the Australian government’s website. Guests can also contact the Australian Embassy or consulate for more information.

When sailing to Alaska, these ships also offer other kid-friendly events, such as Puppies on Princess, when dog mushers and their newest sled dogs come on board for meet-and-greets (and photos!). That makes these ships more appealing to an older demographic that doesn't necessarily want to be on a vessel that's loaded to the gills with children's fun zones and the younger family travelers drawn to that. Notably, the average age of Princess passengers is around 57, and you'll usually see many couples on board in their 50s, 60s and 70s. Unlike the Royal Caribbean and Norwegian ships mentioned above, the two Princess ships sailing from Seattle don't have top decks heavily skewed to family fun. Instead, their top decks offer lots of quiet and relaxing pool and lounge areas where you can enjoy the experience of being at sea without much hustle and bustle. Princess has long been heralded as one of the best cruise lines for multigenerational travel, in part because its ships offer a little something for travelers of all ages.

Day 11: Fun Day at Sea

It's a hallmark of Norwegian's newest and biggest ships. The Port of Seattle's Bell Street Pier Cruise Terminal is located just 14 miles from Seattle Tacoma International Airport. Parking is available at the cruise terminal for $24.00 per day (rates subject to change by Port Authority). If it’s night-time fun that you’re looking for then you won’t be disappointed. Carnival Spirit has more than 6 bars and lounges to choose from featuring all kinds of games, shows and entertainment.

Carnival Cruise Line offers transportation services between Seattle/Tacoma International Airport and the Port of Seattle on the day of embarkation or debarkation only. Guests may purchase transportation up to two days prior to their sail date. Get your airport-to-ship transportation taken care of with worry-free transfer service from Carnival.

ON THE RETURN HOME

However, keep in mind that Alaska can be chilly, even at the height of summer, and rainy, too. Unlike the Royal Caribbean ships, the Norwegian ships also have epic waterslides on their top decks, which in theory, might put them over the top in any listing of the best cruise ships for families based in Seattle. Other cruises might be best for solo travelers or travelers on a tight budget. You’re about to discover just what awaits you on a Carnival cruise. Start by exploring the incredible ports we visit… and the fun things to do, both on the ship and ashore.

NOTE Guests who purchase their own air tickets and are using Carnival’s Airport Transportation are required to provide flight information via Online Check-In no later than two days prior to their cruise date. The airport is staffed based on known flight information. Once all known flights are met, the staff is released and service is no longer available. Carnival Cruise Line offers transportation between San Francisco International Airport and the Port of San Francisco on the days of embarkation or debarkation only. Carnival Cruise Line offers transportation between Rome–Fiumicino International Airport and Port of Civitavecchia on the days of embarkation or debarkation only.

If you missed the purchase window, check with us once you're on board — we'll help you find what you’re looking for. Some take vacations… and some take their vacation further. Carnival Journeys is a limited series of special sailings that’s made to amaze, starting with great destinations and less-traveled routes to get you there. Board a Carnival Journeys cruise and you’re on course for enriching experiences aboard, amazing destinations ashore, classic cruising flair and more. There’s heaps of fun on offer and something for everyone; little ones, big ones and the whole family. The largest waterpark at sea in Australia, mini-golf, two-deck fitness center, jogging track and sports court, Serenity Adult-Only Retreat™, day spa and pools and spas.

Solo passengers on Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Bliss will also find a sometimes rollicking bar scene, with plenty of counter-style seating in bars that are a great place to meet other solo travelers and friendly guests. We recommend the Sugarcane Mojito Bar on Norwegian Bliss. There, the bartender will muddle your mojitos with raspberry, guava, passion fruit or even jalapeno pepper to spice things up when you're sitting with your new solo friends. Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Bliss are also our top picks for ships operating the best Alaska cruises from Seattle for solo travelers. Between these two, it's a tossup, though we put Norwegian Bliss in the headline above since, well, we already gave Norwegian Encore a turn in the limelight with the best-for-luxury category.

Besides the mandatory vaccinations and testing requirements, there are also guidelines for the use of masks onboard, travel insurance, and visa requirements for Australia. Westerdam is also a slightly smaller ship than Eurodam, and as a result, its demographics on any given sailing are more likely to skew toward a retired crowd. To the extent that families with younger kids book Holland America ships, they are more likely to book one of its larger vessels. A special zone for solo travelers is a rare concept in the cruise world, where almost all rooms for vacationers are designed for two people and sold with per-person fares that are based on two people occupying the room.

However, it has its own "ship-within-a-ship" luxury zone that offers a much more swanky experience for those willing to pay. There were very few Carnival sailings available for under $750 per person, with most Carnival sailings starting around $800 per person or more for seven nights. Both of the Royal Caribbean ships sailing to Alaska from Seattle are loaded with attractions that are protected from the elements, including those bumper car pavilions and skydiving simulators.

Carnival Cruise Line will also make it mandatory for all guests to wear a mask for the first days of the voyage, at a minimum until arrival in Honolulu. Guests that are not vaccinated or who are not planning to get their booster shot despite being eligible will be denied boarding. All guests must also provide proof of a medically observed negative COVID-19 test, PCR or Antigen, taken within three days before embarking on Carnival Splendor. Carnival also detailed daily activities and happenings around the vessels during the many sea days onboard. Carnival Cruise Line has released more details on the 23-day Seattle to Sydney cruise onboard Carnival Splendor next month.

Traveling from East on I-90- Take I-90 west towards Seattle. Take the ramp towards Western Avenue and continue onto Western Avenue. The purchase window for certain products and activities closes before to the sail end date. If you missed the purchase window, check with us on board, we'll help you find what you’re looking for.
